Start with the loading process
List the goods you carry and how you load them. For a tarpaulin trailer, check which sides open and whether the manufacturer allows frame sections to be removed. For a box trailer, measure the doorway, threshold and space behind the doors. Interior dimensions do not guarantee that an equally wide item will fit through the opening. If you use a pallet truck or trolley, confirm floor and ramp suitability for the selected model.
Compare payload in the final configuration
Compare the trailers as you intend to purchase them. The frame, cover, doors, ramp and optional equipment affect unladen weight. At the same gross vehicle weight, a heavier body leaves less payload. Include packaging and load securing equipment in your weight estimate. The largest cargo space is not necessarily the most suitable choice.
Separate weather protection from load securing
A tarpaulin or box body serves a different purpose from load securing points. Check their position, ratings and accessibility after loading. Choose restraints for the goods and follow the manufacturer instructions. Closed doors or a tensioned cover should not be treated as sufficient protection against cargo movement. For delicate equipment, also consider floor contact and rubbing during travel.
Check protection and maintenance
Inspect body joints, seals, fasteners and places where water could collect. An ordinary enclosed body does not provide controlled temperature. For moisture-sensitive or temperature-sensitive goods, ask about a suitable specialist configuration. Consider ventilation, cleaning and drying after use. With a tarpaulin, check how easy it is to tension the cover and obtain replacement wear parts.
Arrange a demonstration and comparable quotations
Bring the dimensions of your largest item and the estimated weight of a typical load. Ask to see the opening and closing process and access to securing points.
