Collecting a new trailer: a checklist before the first journey

Check the order, practise the controls, inspect the connection and collect the documents before taking your new trailer home.

Compare the trailer with your order

Bring the order confirmation and agreed equipment list. Check the model, identification markings and the specifications in the supplied documents. Compare the floor, sides, ramp, cover or body with the purchased configuration. Photograph and raise any differences before completing handover. A catalogue image does not necessarily show the exact equipment fitted to your trailer.

Ask for an operating demonstration

Go beyond a visual inspection. Ask how to couple the trailer, use the jockey wheel and operate sides and locks. For a braked trailer, discuss the parking brake and overrun system in line with the manual. For a tilting trailer, tipper or car transporter, check how the equipment is deployed and secured. Practise tasks that require a particular sequence with the person handing over the trailer.

Inspect the connection to the car

Before departure, confirm that the coupling is engaged and the safety components are used as specified in the vehicle and trailer instructions. Connect the electrics and check the lights with another person. Check cable routing and the stowed jockey wheel. Inspect the tyres and establish the specified pressure. Follow manufacturer guidance for wheel fixing checks and any inspection required after the first kilometres.

Collect documents and note service intervals

Collect the documents listed in your order, the operating instructions and warranty and service information. Ask about inspection intervals, routine maintenance and after-sales contacts. Note where identification markings are located and which details are needed when ordering parts. Check the formal requirements for your combination and place of use before the first journey.

Plan the first load separately

Collecting an empty trailer does not replace transport planning. Establish the cargo weight, choose suitable securing points and decide how to restrain the load. Account for the limits of the car, trailer and coupling. If you are inexperienced, ask about load distribution and manoeuvring. Before collection from Witmar, confirm the trailer is ready, the documents available and whether an operating demonstration can be arranged.
